Shimba Hills National Reserve is located some 15 kilometres from the Indian Ocean. It is one of the largest coastal forests in East Africa.

You will be picked from your hotel at around 7.00 am and drive to Shimba Hills, a distance of 35 kms from Diani arriving at the gate at around 8.00 am.

Begin a game drive visiting Sheldrick Waterfalls escorted by a game ranger.

Shimba Hills is a tropical rain forest which covers an area of 202 sq km. Physical attractions include casuarinas forests, Marere Dam (a water hole where animals come to drink water), Sheldrick Waterfalls.

The landscape is grassland. Animals seen in this area include elephants, buffalos, giraffes, impalas, heartbeats, rare leopards, black and white monkeys, attractive sable antelopes, and roan antelopes among others.

Shimba Hills has different species of birds like (tropical guinea fowls, fish eagles, falcons and weaver birds, ground horny bills among others.

Drive back to Shimba Lodge for lunch. 

Later, take another game at the Elephant Lookout where mid-afternoon you will go on a hike with a Ranger down to the beautiful Sheldrick Falls and relax beside the coolness of the waterfall.

Beyond the serene sandy beaches of Mombasa, elephants and sable antelopes leisurely patrol the gently rolling and one of the largest coastal rain forest of Shimba Hills National Reserve in Kwale County.

This reserve has the last breeding herd of the rare sable antelope in Kenya.

The vanishing rain forest antelopes are on the priority list of nationally endangered species in Kenya and the organization is keen on seeing that a national conservation strategy is developed to guide all efforts to conserve the species for posterity.

Sable antelopes are highly matriarchal in their social structure and congregate in herds of 15 to 20 individuals and the most dominant female in the herd becomes their leader.
