Self-drive Nairobi Car hire requirements

Before hiring a vehicle, we require the following original Documents:

  • National Identity Card / Passport
  • Valid driver’s license or International Driver’s license
  • Document to certify your residence or place of work ie: Work ID, Work Permit, VISA, Utility bill, document from Company HR

Duration of the Hire

We reserve the right to hire out our vehicles for a minimum of 3 days, while on self-drive.
Chauffeur driven rentals, VIP transportation and Airport transfers can be hired for 1 day or per event.

Chauffeur Driven

Wedding Services are strictly chauffeur driven and run from 0600hrs and 1800hrs.
Any additional time is subject to an agreed over-time fee.

Payment Policy

Online & card payments are subject to a bank transaction fee of 4%.

Wedding services require 40% advance deposit(refundable), the balance is completed one day before the wedding day.

Cross Border Hire

A Written authorization letter and documents should be obtained from Kenya 4wd Car Rental in advance, should the hirer wish to cross the Kenyan border out of Kenya.

Kenya 4wd Car Rental will not take any responsibility if the hirer is stopped from entry into another country. We allow cross border travel to East African Community Countries (Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and South Sudan).

COMESA insurance, Yellow Fever vaccine and other documents are required for crossing the border and are borne by the Hirer.

Liability Insurance

All our hired vehicles are comprehensively insured. In the event of damage or mismanagement of the vehicle, the hirer carries full cost of repair for the vehicle if the cost of repair is less than 10% of the insurance value.

However, if the cost of repair is more than 10% of the vehicles’ insured value or is written off or lost the hirer bears the cost of the excess premium provided by the insurance company.
It is the hirers’ sole responsibility to keep the car safe at all times.

What is the minimum duration for hiring a car?

We hire out our cars for a minimum of 4 days while on self-drive. You can hire a car for 1 day or per event while hiring it on chauffeur driven basis.

What documents do I need to have before hiring a car?

You require to have original copies of your valid Driver’s license, National ID card / Passport and the following secondary documents; Official letter from your company, Business license certificate, Valid entry VISA (proof of entry into the country), work permit, work ID, Utility bill or any other relevant document.


We require 10 % deposit to reserve a car with the balance payable on the first day of the hire.

Car Rental prices:  Are available upon request.

How can I pay for my booking?

We accept Visa, Mastercard, PesaPal, MPESA Wallet, and Cash or Bank transfers.
Note, we will require a security deposit to be left for the vehicle on self-drive basis. This is payable by the hirer, and it is 100% refundable. in the event, the vehicle is not damaged while in your possession.

REFUND: Can I get a refund If I return the car earlier than the scheduled date of return?

Yes. In the event you return a car before the rental period is over, we will refund for the unutilized days.
Please NOTE: Half of the refund for the unused period will be deducted as the cancellation fee, and the balance will be refunded to you.


Can I amend a confirmed Booking?

Yes. For amending your booking dates feel free to contact us either via Email or Call at least  2 days before the start if the hire so as to change the scheduled booking.

Can I hire A car with a chauffeur?

Yes you can, we offer chauffeur-driven services. Simply contact us with the booking and we’ll provide you with a chauffeur who will pick you from your residence and travel with you. NOTE: An extra fee for the driver’s allowance is charged as extra.

How Can I Cancel my booking?

Yes, we accept cancellations. Prior communication is highly recommended. Please read through our terms and conditions.

Do we offer car rental for corporates?

Yes, we do a lot. Some of the services we offer for corporates include Chauffeur driven car rental, VIP car rental services, Airport transfers, Shuttle buses transportation for delegates, Group travels, Team building activities and incentives.

Some features of our corporate car rental include:

1) Payment Flexibility – You can pay for the car rental service flexible via various methods including bank transfers, online payment modes, company cheques, and Telegraphic transfers among others.

2) Invoice payments – You don’t have to pay in advance, we raise and invoice after your rental period.

3) Exclusive discounts on monthly rentals – Enjoy some discounts for long term monthly basis rentals.


Basically, if you pick up the car on Full-Tank, you return on a full tank. If you pick up while empty, you return likewise.

What are age restrictions while hiring a car?

The minimum age required for hiring a car with Kenya 4 WD Rental is 21 years old. However, the basis of age restrictions is on the driving experience.

We allow a minimum 5 Years driving experience on the Kenyan roads since the date of your driver’s license Expiry. For international travelers seeking to hire a car within the country, we require a 5-year driving experience in your home country.

Can I hire a car with a baby seat?

Yes, we can arrange for a baby seat at an extra charge.

Can I visit the Kenyan National Parks and Game Reserves with a hired or rental car?

Yes, you can visit the game parks with our rented cars. However, please alert us in advance and we can offer you professional advice about driving conditions at the National Parks and Game Reserves.

What is Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)?

It is an insurance limiting your liability to the excess amount in case of damage. We will, however, brief you about this while hiring the car with us.

What happens in the event a car is lost?

Please note if the vehicle is stolen and you are found negligent, like leaving the door unlocked, leaving the car keys irresponsibly, driving while under the influence (either alcohol or any mind-altering drug) or at a vulnerable location, you will be liable for the full cost of the vehicle.

Do I pay for towing in the event the car breaks down?

In the event of any mechanical breakdown and the car requires to be towed, we do not charge you for the towing fee.

However, if you are liable for causing mechanical damage and the car needs to be towed, you are required to pay for the towing fees to our nearest garage.

What is an international driver’s license and why do I need one?

The International Driving License (IDL) is a document that is acknowledged worldwide and identifies its holder as a licensed driver.
For international clients looking to drive and hire a car with us, we strongly recommend the International Driving License.
It is however not mandatory for our clients among the Commonwealth Nations.

Do I need both parts of my British license to rent a car in Kenya:

If you have the new photo ID license you must take the paper part as well. If your license is not written in Roman characters (e.g. Russian, Chinese, etc.), you will need to obtain an international driver’s permit before you travel from your country of residence.
