4-day Mount Kenya climb via the Sirimon Route is a popular, drier trek reaching Point Lenana (4985m), involving forest, moorland, and wide ridges, typically structured as Day 1: Nairobi to Old Moses Camp; Day 2: Old Moses to Shipton’s Camp; Day 3: Summit Attempt to Point Lenana & Descend to Old Moses; Day 4: Old Moses back to Sirimon Gate & Nairobi. It offers great scenery, huts/camping, and is considered one of the easier ways to reach the summit, focusing on acclimatization and diverse ecosystems.

Overview

Mount Kenya is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second highest in Africa after Mt. Kilimanjaro.

For mountain climbing enthusiasts, a few things can be as rewarding as climbing Mt. Kenya; reaching the peak is extremely exhilarating.

The Mountain is located in Central Kenya, and it has three main peaks; Batian (5,199m), Nelion (5,188m) and Point Lenana (4,985m).

The 4-day Mount Kenya climb via the Sirimon route involves reaching Point Lenana (4,985m) by ascending through the dry, forest-rich Sirimon side of the mountain, reaching Old Moses Camp on day one, and then Shipton Camp.

On day two, before a challenging summit attempt on day three followed by an early descent back to Old Moses camp, and then finally to the Sirimon gate and Nairobi on day four.

This creative climb joins two of the most scenic routes up Mount Kenya, Sirimon and Chogoria, producing a remarkably diverse and spectacular trek.

Sirimon coming off the west of Mount Kenya passes through the dry side of the mountain with its giant trees and rocky terrain, and the descent onto the Chogoria path is exactly different with its lush bamboo and highland forests.

The final nighttime ascent of Point Lenana can be as difficult as any ascent in East Africa, but the rest of the trek is generally considered easier than either Kilimanjaro or the Rwenzoris.

Day 1: Nairobi-Sirimon-Old Moses

You have the morning link up with your courteous and knowledgeable driver/guide either at the Jomo Kenyatta Airport, Nairobi or at your Nairobi Hotel.

Take the 4-hour drive to the Sirimon Gate of Mount Kenya National Park via Nanyuki Town; where you pick up the mountain trekking crew. Continue to the Sirimon Gate (2,600 metres) and commence the trek.

Take the 5-hour trek; passing through the forest, rosewood, bamboo and heather zones gaining an elevation of 0f 740 metres.

You may encounter some elephants, buffalos, bushbucks and huge variety of birds on the way.

Arrival at the Old Moses Camp (3,340 metres). Overnight at the Camp. Half board

Sirimon Mount Kenya 4 Days

Day 2: Old Moses – Shipton’s

Breakfast. Take the 8-hour hike today and gain an elevation of 900 metres to reach the Moorland zone.

Today, you have a test of patience, endurance and determination as you trek via the Sirimon Track to the Likii North Valley; below the subsidiary peaks of Teleki and Sendeyo; two ancient parasitic vents of the main peaks.

Mount Kenya Climbing Expeditions

Trek onto the Mackinder’s Valley, one of the broadest valleys on the mountain with many giant loberias and groundsels.

Arrival at the Shiptons Camp (4,200 metres); just below the main peaks of Batian and Nelion. Overnight at Shiptons Camp. Full board

Day 3: Shipton’s-Point Lenana-Shipton’s-Old Moses

0300 hours: Take the alpine ascent on the trekkers summit; Point Lenana (4,985 metres). You have 4 hours of stiff walking to reach Point Lenana by sunrise.

This is the most challenging day of the whole trek. Take your photos. Commence the descent back to Shiptons Camp for lunch. Descend to the Old Moses Camp and overnight at the Camp. Full board

Day 4: Old Moses-Sirimon-Nanyuki Town-Nairobi

Breakfast. Take the descent from the Old Moses Camp; and onto the Sirimon Gate and connect onto your transport back to Nairobi; where you arrive in the evening and are dropped off. Breakfast and lunch
